In 1896, the last reigning monarch of Hawai'i, Queen Liliuokalani, was held prisoner within her own palace as she and her sovereign nation were overthrown by the U.S. Marines. Since communication with her people was prohibited, people snuck songs and poems written in Hawaiian, wrapped in flowers to her. The website, Kaulana Na Pua, showcases one of the numerous songs wrtten from the Hawaiian people to their queen, translating the lyrics from Hawaiian to English as you scroll.
